The Black Swan

The Black Swan comes from a book written in 2007 by author and former options trader Nassim Nicholas Taleb. The book focuses on the extreme impact of rare and unpredictable outlier events — and the human tendency to find simplistic explanations for these events, retrospectively.

In 2010, former investment banker and investor Mr. Red partnered with Mr. Black, a former British Royal Marine Commando and Counter Terrorism Expert, to launch a 'high-risk /high-threat' security and intelligence company named Empirica S.A..

It is through this partnership that the provisioning of security solutions have been provided to multinational clients, government agencies and non-governmental organizations ("NGOs") in areas such as Afghanistan, Iraq, The Sudan, Somalia and multiple others.

Given that hostile environments are dynamically evolving and nothing is predictable, we chose the Black Swan as our logo.

The Story

On one of the early forays into NE Afghanistan, Mr. Red made the observation that the 'operators' providing a client security assessment, had some very well-worn and durable backpacks to which Mr. Black said 'This ain't no fashion show but we could do with a bit more style eh mate? Maybe a bit like Paul Smith.'

Hence, the idea was born where bespoke battle tested packs are tastefully updated with a bit of color without sacrificing durability and ruggedness. Enter Black Swan Gear...
